PUBLIC HOLIDAY: NATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

On this day in 1956, 20 000 women marched against the pass laws imposed by the Apartheid government. The legislation required African persons to carry a document on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’.  Their protest song, "You strike a woman, you strike a rock" has come to represent women's courage and strength in South Africa.
