REVIEW: CASSETTE

cassetteCassette n. a container that holds a magnetic tape used for recording or playing sound or video.

For me, this changed on Saturday.  Cassette is now a quirky suit-clad country-and-alternative-singing rock band… hmmm, yes, that’s what I thought too. Initially the band’s ability to work the crowd was impressive, but they lost it a little when they started singing covers of other bands’ songs. This can be pulled off flawlessly with certain songs and certain bands but… well… not really in this case.

I was pleasantly surprised by the two smaller warm-up bands, Peachy Kean and Fox Comet. Peachy Kean had a striking look: two lead females resembling Kat Von D from LA Ink complete with tattoo sleeves, piercings, two-tone hair, pencil skirts and stilettos covered in skulls, a suit-wearing cellist, a homeless-looking guitarist and a professional gamer with a comedy tie taking on the drums.  Despite having more of a country hillbilly sound than their look promised the show was highly entertaining. They already had their groupies – albeit their parents and friends who were taking over the front row and singing along to songs I have never heard.

But the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Fox Comet.  I had never heard of them before but they blew my socks off!! From the hilarious hyperactive lead singer to the catchy tunes, this band is a gem in the making. Knowing how to entertain your crowd has to be the number one factor of a good band, and this guy was kicking and head banging and even had a stint on the floor when his manoeuvre was not executed as successfully as he anticipated… but his recovery was great!! Definitely a band to keep an eye on.
