33, 2nd Crescent Fish Hoek
A tiny 25 seater venue, this is in fact the home of Bill Knight, a cult folk musician on the South African scene. On a fortnightly basis, Bill plays host to many other local musicians including the likes of Tony Cox, Steve Newman, Robin Auld, Hot Water, Guy Buttery, Luna Paige and Gerald Clark. The club inspires great loyalty among its patrons, so booking is essential. Located in a residential area on the picturesque mountain slopes overlooking the Kommetjie valley, the venue is of course restricted to acoustic performances, with artists continuing unplugged after 11pm. There is a recording studio in the adjacent room of the house and as such a high quality recording of each event is often available to patrons. The venue does not have a bar but patrons are allowed to bring their own alcohol and picnic baskets. Hearty soup and homemade bread are normally available, but must be pre-ordered.
“Situated in Kommetjie, a dramatically beautiful area where savage terrain cascades into a seething ocean, the Cottage Club is a blend of upmarket bohemia and mellow aestheticism.”
