13th Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival (AWHAF)This year marks the 13th Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival (AWHAF), a series of  stage productions, workshops, films exhibitions, discussions and talks that focus on issues relating to (but not exclusive to) women.

The programme recognises  August 9, the historic day in 1956 when more than 20 000 women march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws and inhumane Apartheid legislation.

27 July – Absolutely Fabulously Drag

The AWHAF launches with the show Absolutely Fabulously Drag, which features male and female lip syncing, preened feathers, fluttering eyelashes and glittering and sequins.

1 to 2 August – Jakes Gerwel Foundation and Suidoosterfees Pitching Event

The Jakes Gerwel Foundation and the Suidoosterfees partner and invite upcoming artists to pitch their ideas to become part of a mentoring programme aimed at newcomers in the industry.

6 to 9 August – Kamphoer

Kamphoer: The true story of Susan Nell, who, during the Anglo-Boer War (1899 to 1902) was raped and left for dead. In later years her path crosses with that of her rapist and Kamphoer is what transpires.

7 to 10 August – The Widow

The Widow is A series of monologues representing a platform to investigate how widows cope after the loss of their spouses. The monologues aim to create dialogue towards healing and recognising the pain that comes with loss.

On August 9, Women’s Day, The Artscape Theatre Complex will be alive with activities, such as free interactive entertainment and panel discussions. Prominent features include:

Black, White, Red; Yellow Art Exhibition: A colourful exploration of the life and times of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu as well as Health Screenings pertinent to women.

Milanie Vosloo’s inspirational talk: How women can increase their self-esteem through the belief in God – a topic throughout several of her books. The talk is prior to the opening of Kamphoer on August 7.
