The melodic pop-rock band, aKING, hailing from Bellville in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, was formed by Fokofpolisiekar members Laudo Liebenberg (vocals, guitar) and Hennie van Halen (bass) in 2007.
The result combines Laudo’s low booming vocals with well-considered lyrics about life, love and growing up behind the ‘boerewors’ curtain. Their tongue-in-cheek yet sentimental lyrics have earned them their large local fan base.
aKING is also associated with brother bands Fokofpolisiekar, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Van Coke Kartel, to the extent that the four bands have performed together as a ‘concept project’ under the name VanFokKingTasties. The group has performed at many popular festivals throughout the country, including Ramfest, Oppikoppi, Rocking the Daisies and KKNK and can often be seen at local venues such as the Cape Farmhouse, Zula Bar, Kirstenbosch Gardens and the Dorpstraat Theatre. Amongst their multiple shows the band has also appeared on television shows Pasella, The Showbiz Report, Artcha, KADA, Glitterati, KykNET and Noted.
aKING’s fifth CD release The Red Blooded Years was released in 2011, following on from Dutch Courage (2008), Love Your Neighbour (2008), In the Twilight (2008) and Against All Odds (2009).
