Bombshelter Beast is the kind of band that cannot be put into a box. Their music crosses multiple genres and their 15 members grow and change, with surprise guests often featuring in the live shows. Theirs is a new kind of sound, one never before heard. That is to be expected when the members include a legendary jazz musician, an accordion-playing Polish refugee, an Afrikaans opera singer and a UK-born kwaito star. They may be from diverse geographical and musical backgrounds and they may play a wide range of instruments, but they are all excellent musicians, each with their own followings.
The band describe themselves as an Afrobalkan-skadubhall band. When they perform, they wear costumes with the only rule being “anything goes, as long as it’s over the top”. Their performances are a sensory experience of sound and sight. They are unconventional and gaining fast in popularity since their formation in 2015.
This year they return to Woordfees to perform at the picturesque Jan Marais Nature Reserve as part of the Sanlam Music Festival. It is a picnic concert so bring a blanket to sit on and something warm to wear. There are food stalls at the event.
