The Cape Town City Ballet presents an adaptation of Alexander Puskin’s short story Mozart and Salieri. The classical story plays out in Marc Goldberg’s forward-thinking 21st century design to create a cinematic experience complete with digital elements and costumes created by three designers.
The story follows the rumoured rivalry of Mozart and court composer, Antonio Salieri. The audience witnesses dark undercurrents of jealousy and sabotage from Salieri, whose pious demeanour is challenged greatly when meeting Mozart. But this ballet production does not only centre on political intrigue and envy, it also tells the love story of Mozart and Constanze, their meeting, marriage and subsequent children, all depicted within the palace gardens.
Another exciting facet to Goldberg’s adaptation is his exploration of what it might have been like to create such a prolific body of work by 35, as Mozart famously did. Sweeping scenes depicting Mozart within his own creative process add a layer to the story not previously explored.
