In Cape Town, there’s no shortage of unique and charismatic venues to host a memorable function. Here’s our selection of interesting event spaces with different settings and atmospheres for various occasions.
A 160-year old Georgian structure with Victorian fretwork, the monumental Leinster Hall in Gardens is home to The Stack. Founders Nigel Pace and Sarah Ord wanted to create a “special space where like-minded, fabulously interesting people come to share their love of all.” Beyond a private members’ club on the top floor, there’s an open-to-the-public restaurant, bar and brasserie on the ground floor, providing many options for hosting unique events. The interior is decorated with thick leopard-skin carpets, eccentric upholstered chairs, sparkling chandeliers and hand-picked art. On the first floor, the verandah offers calming views of the mountain. A variety of event packages are available, with access to different areas, such as meeting rooms or exclusive use of the brasserie and members’ lounge for larger events and functions.
For a ‘slightly louche’, prohibition-era Speakeasy-style setting, consider The Drinkery – a quirky, secret bar inside New Heritage Gallery. The interior, ALL items of which are for sale, is decorated with local and international art, photography, mixed media and sculpture, as well as unique collectibles, furnishings, and desirable objects. In this cosy, candle-lit setting, with Latin jazz and vocals schmoozing in the background, guests can enjoy a selection of wines, bubbly MCC, local gins, whiskey, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. “No fuss, no frills, no hurry,” promises ‘the mistress of the house’. The venue can be booked for a variety of occasions.
Located above a former box-cutting factory in Paarden Eisland, ColorBox Studios is a creative and experimental event venue. With warm, natural lighting as well as minimal design and movable components, the 300sqm revamped Victorian warehouse is a versatile space for memorable parties, functions, and networking events. The owners call it a “blank canvas” that can be adapted to suit any style. ColorBox Studios is just 3km drive away from the city centre, and guests can enjoy spectacular views of the mountain. It’s also a popular location for industrial, rustic-style weddings.
ZEITZ MOCAA EVENTS
The iconic Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa), inside the refurbished and redesigned silos at the V&A Waterfront, offers a charismatic setting for a variety of occasions. Like the museum, the event spaces – The Venue on Level 6 and The BMW Atrium – have been thoughtfully constructed for a one-of-a-kind experience. An exploration of “design, form and light”, The Venue on Level 6 is marked by a 270-degree view of Cape Town, and looks out onto the museum’s rooftop sculpture garden. The BMW Atrium, suitable for arrival drinks and canapés, is a cathedral-like space, rising 33m high, and carved out of the original silo bins. All events are managed by The Aleit Group, renowned for their 17 years of experience in organising spectacular, high-end events and weddings. Packages can include various catering options as well as event coordination.
The Homestead venue is a heritage building in the Southern Suburbs, with a unique Victorian feel for various types of events. For colder days, there’s an intimate Cape Dutch-style indoor area and, for outdoor functions, there’s a lush rose garden and cosy ‘stoep’ area. Renovated by Food Fanatics, a renowned and well-established catering company, the venue has a full on-site catering kitchen as well as a vegetable and herb garden. Event services include service staff, coordination, décor and – of course – catering. Food Fanatics tailors each menu and theme to individual styles, budgets and wishes. “Our approach to food and catering is holistic and wholesome. No matter the occasion, we work passionately with food,” insists the team.
