De Vrije Burger (translating from Dutch to The Free Burger, or The Free Citizen), is a burger joint in Stellenbosch that serves up 100% Free-range beef, double cheese, homemade bun and all the trimmings.
Star chef Bertus Basson launched the Plein Street restaurant in 2018 and it has been a favourite for both locals and tourists. De Vrije Burger even received industry approval with their win for the Eat Out Everyday Eatery Best Burger Award in the Western Cape for 2019.
In what some would consider a ballsy move, you will not find a laundry list of burger variations on the menu. Basson keeps it simple by offering only a standard double cheeseburger with three topping options.
South African heritage is a recurring theme in Basson’s cooking and comes in the form of Melrose and bacon topping and uitpakslaai.
We recommend pairing your burger with an ice-cold craft beer from Windpomp Lager, and the restaurant throws in a free ice cream cone with every burger order.
