For parents looking to entertain their kids this holiday season, we’ve made a list of fun and engaging activities, some for the youngsters to enjoy on their own while their parents relax nearby, and some for the whole family to indulge in.
At the immersive Wonderdal Edutainment Centre at Hazendal Wine Estate, 5 to 13 year-old kids can learn, be creative and have fun during a two-hour-long adventure.
Youngsters wear a magic bracelet that transports them into a world of wonders, embarking on a journey with their new friends, the Amuki, the playful guardians of Wonderdal. Together, they create energy, collect mysterious crystals, listen to stories and read books in The Story Cave. They also grow imaginary plants, cook delicious virtual meals, climb, balance, jump, build, discover and – of course – have endless fun.
While the kids are having the time of their lives, parents can pop in at the Babushka Deli for a light meal, delectable treats or a picnic on the expansive lawns, as they sip on Hazendal’s award-winning wines. It’s also worth visiting The Pivnushka Beer Garden or The Marvol Gallery, and adrenaline junkies can tackle the MTB trail.

Scootours consist of freewheeling down-hill runs on non-motorised push bikes. Originally used on the ski slopes of the Alps during the snow-free summer season, these Swiss-designed, easy-to-manoeuvre scooters are a safe and unique way for kids to have fun while exploring the outdoors.
All participants will receive riding instructions by friendly staff, as well as helmets and cycling gloves, and transport to the top of each run is included in the package.
There are birthday party options for kids 10 years and older, who will be able to ride their own scooter. Parties for four-to-nine year-olds are an adventure for the whole family, because parents will ride the scooter with their children. To qualify for birthday party rates, there needs to be a group of at least six people, and a free online invitation is included in each birthday party booking.
The tours end at Deer Park, and participants are encouraged to bring snacks and refreshments to enjoy a picnic afterwards. It’s also very close to some of Cape Town’s top beaches – another recommended option for winding down after the scooter trip.

Breakaway Rides offers mountain bike courses to teach children the skills they need to ride safely and with confidence. Progressive skills are introduced in well-structured lessons to provide essential riding techniques for young riders.
Their school holiday camps are held over three days at various riding locations, with options for the northern and southern suburbs. According to the organisers, the fun factor is very important during the skills clinics, although there are some specific technique drills in the first half, and practical application in single trails during the latter half.
The camps are tailored to six-to-nine year-olds or 10 to 15 year-olds and are taught by professional mountain bike instructors with a first-aid certificate. Basic mechanical support, snacks, and a goody bag (not included for one day sessions) is provided, but participants need to bring a well-maintained bicycle, spare tubes, water bottles mounted to the bike, sunscreen, as well as a helmet, gloves and comfortable clothes for the ride. The workshops run from 9 to 11am each day and Breakaway Rides provides options for foundation, intermediate and advanced skills levels.

Atlantic Surf is hosting a Summer Holiday Surf Club at Blouberg Beach during the December school holidays. The camps are aimed at five to 15 year-olds, and the idea is to entertain children while they learn about the ocean and how to share it with others. There are options for absolute beginners, as well as more advanced surfers.
Through interactive practical games in the ocean and on the beach, as well as ventures to the rock pools, beach clean-ups and team building activities, beginners are not only taught how to surf or bodyboard, but how to enjoy the ocean in a fun and safe way.
The Grom Academy is for intermediate to competent surfers who already know how to catch clean waves. This group will be part of the same camp but they will be surfing at the backline, with more advanced coaching to help take their surfing to the next level.
