The popular Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunsfees (KKNK) presents the iconic one-woman show, Die Naaimasjien (The SewingMachine) by Rachelle Greeff as part of its virtual 2021 programme.
The production has been filmed especially for the KKNK and is the first show that can be viewed on the KKNK website. The show is Afrikaans, but English viewers have the option to watch a version with English subtitles.
After hundreds of performances across the country over a period of almost three years, and an unforgettable run at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, new life is blown into DieNaaimasjien.
The play centres around Magdaleen (played by Sandra Prinsloo) sitting in her room in the old-age home. She cleans every part of her sewing machine because she has sold it, and the woman on the phone said that she will be there to collect it at three this afternoon. With compassion and humour, Magdaleentakes viewers back to a time of milk deliveries, filter coffee, stockings with seams and white Valiants. And she reminds viewers that a mother – like a babushka doll– stands within each of her children.
The production is directed and designed by Hennie van Greune. The soundtrack features the vocals of, amongst others, Stian Bam, Joanie Combrink, Deon Lotz, ViljéMaritz and Pedro Kruger.
Carien Loubser, award-winning producer and TV director of series like Die Republiek van Zoid Afrika and Jan, captured the production of the film. The film is presented by the KKNK in partnership with Brainwave Productions and Wordsmith’s Theatre Factory.
