Farm-based getaways. Just the thought of it makes you breathe a little deeper, doesn’t it? For some pure and wholesome time out, nothing beats staying on a working farm. It’s all about grounding yourself and reconnecting with the wonders of nature.
For an authentic country experience less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town, cast your sights no further than the beautiful region surrounding the Elgin Valley. Affectionately known as the valley of apples, it is also the valley of adventure, wines, flowers and thousands of views that stretch for miles! And nestled within lie some of the finest farmstays in the Cape region.
Farm accommodation here is made up mostly of restored farm cottages set amongst orchards and vineyards. Most farms have sparkling dams that entice the whole family to go for a swim or try their luck at casting a line for some catch-and-release fishing. But whether your intention is to relax under the vines on your verandah, or explore the farm trails, or hide away to observe the abundant birdlife, farmstays are a perfect way to enjoy a healthy slice of bucolic bliss.

The perfect home away from home
Nestled deep within the Elgin Valley, Rockhaven Farm is a sanctuary of tranquillity. Surrounded by stunning mountain vistas, and the Cape’s incredible fynbos, the fully functioning farm produces everything from apples and pears to spectacular hydrangeas. Rockhaven truly is the perfect location to get away from it all.
The farm offers onsite accommodation in two welcoming, self-catering cottages, each offering classic farmhouse charm with contemporary style and conveniences.
Frog Cottage is the largest of the two, comfortably sleeping six in three spacious en-suite rooms. The bathrooms all have underfloor heating, the latest fixtures and either free-standing baths or walk-in showers. The bedrooms are equipped with queen-sized beds, the finest linens, spectacular views of the Elgin Valley, and a mix of classic and contemporary pieces that create the perfect ambience for a great night’s sleep.
Orchard Cottage provides quaint open-plan living, with a homey feel but a modern touch. The kitchen/dining area leads to an entertainment patio and private garden, perfect for al fresco dining, summer braais, or winters around the fire. There are two en-suite bedrooms, beautifully furnished, guaranteed to provide you with a restful sleep.
An all-in-one farm experience
The Beaumont Family Wine Farm offers accommodation in two historic cottages: The Mill House and Pepper Tree Cottage. Both are beautifully restored and furnished with cotton bedlinen and Mungo towels. From the moment of arrival, guests find themselves well sorted with plenty of firewood, coffee, tea, farm eggs, butter, sugar and the farm’s delicious Mill Flour Rusks.
The stoep of each cottage is a wonderful place to relax, with views stretching out across the vineyards to the mountains beyond. On colder nights, the open fireplace in the kitchens and the wood-burning stove in the living rooms ensure a cosy retreat.
The farm offers beautiful walks, mountain hikes, mountain bike trails and dam swims. Guests looking for a more leisurely stay can spend their time sipping wine and watching birds.
Those with an interest in wine are invited to explore the beautifully restored wine cellar, dating back to the 1940s, and to taste the farm’s award-winning range of wines. The farm is also home to the seriously impressive Zest deli which offers seasonal mouth-watering menus showcasing all that is local and in season.
Wine farm hospitality at its best
A proudly family-run affair, Paul Wallace Wines is known for its hospitality and its highly-rated wines.
At Paul Wallace Wines and Cottages you will be welcomed by Paul and Nicky Wallace and their four-footed friends. The well-equipped self-catering farm cottages are set alongside their tasting room where you can expect a personal introduction to their range of award-winning wines.
Whilst farm life is busy, you can take it slow. Snuggle up in front of the fireplace with a good book, take a walk through the vineyards, admire the roses, stand at the top of the hill and look down on the raptors playing in the updrafts, set your line to hook that monster largemouth bass lurking in the dam and enjoy the glorious sunsets.
There are two cottages which sleep four people each, and a third cottage suitable for a couple. All have unlimited Wi-fi, with DSTV in the larger cottages and Netflix in the two-sleeper. But really – who even wants that when you can choose instead to sit back and soak up the scenery around a braai or sip a sundowner in this little spot of heaven.
Located in the centre of the Elgin Valley, close to wedding venues, mountain bike and hiking trails.
The perfect space to unwind
Right in the heart of the picturesque Elgin Valley, nestled amongst the fruit orchards of this working apple, pear and persimmon farm, lie three neatly renovated and spacious cottages.
Moortop is an appropriate name. This family-owned farm occupies one of the highest points in the Elgin valley, blessing it with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
The cottages are situated close to most of the wedding venues in the area and are easily accessible to popular farm stalls for those wanting to indulge in the local hearty fare. The farm itself is a wonderful space to unwind and watch the birds flitting about their business in the indigenous gardens. Switch off surrounded by nature or indulge in a variety of outdoor activities from strolling through the orchards to MTB on the nearby trails.
