Returning to the Oude Libertas Ampitheatre, Cape Town City Ballet presents Giselle – a two-act ballet with a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Theophile Gautier.
The ballet tells the story of a peasant girl named Giselle, whose ghost protects her lover from the vengeance of a group called Wilis – evil spirits of women who were abandoned before their wedding day – who rise from their graves at night and seek revenge upon men by dancing them to death.
This play incorporates corps de ballet, a ballet style where the choreography demands that each dancer is totally in sync with the music – a difficult & skillful task. The CTCB’s corps is recognised as being of world class.
