Goodman Gallery is one of the longest-standing and most distinguished contemporary art galleries. Established in Johannesburg in 1966, during the apartheid era, the gallery has a history of speaking to social issues and showcases artists who use their work as a form of social commentary to shift perspectives and engender transformation.
Since 2008, under the directorship of Liza Essers, Cape Town’s Goodman Gallery has been running three ongoing major curatorial initiatives: In Context, which presents collaborative projects confronting the dynamics and tensions of place and space, South-South, a project exploring integration between major powers of the global south, placing common histories and experiences at its core, and Working Title which offers a platform for emerging, new and independent production and thinking.
