Great Places to Eat in Elgin & Surrounds

The area surrounding the Elgin Valley – long renowned for its excellent wine – has in recent years quietly become home to some great restaurant options: everything from relaxed dining with classic dishes to generous country food, elegantly served and lovingly prepared from home-grown produce. There’s something for every palate in this valley of apples, wines, flowers and a thousand views. And, because locally-sourced food doesn’t necessarily come with hefty price tags, you’ll find a selection of price ranges too.

Farm to table seasonality

The diversity of this family-run and family-owned farm reveals itself in the inspiring food accompanying their award-winning wines. Each visitor to Beaumont is welcomed with heart-warming hospitality into the Zest Deli & Kitchen. Zest uses the freshest produce and offers a seasonal menu that celebrates Elgin’s local suppliers as well as produce harvested from the farm itself.

Before lunch at Zest, we recommend exploring the range of wines in the Tasting Room. There are often cellar door specials on offer, or limited releases and unusual wines. Take a tour through the historical cellar and if luck is on your side, you might get a taste of something special from the barrel.

Afterward, at the Deli you can sit back and take your time to watch the farm at work, soaking up the country atmosphere while enjoying a lovingly prepared meal with a glass of delicious Beaumont Wine in hand.

Guests can also browse the selection of ingredients and treats in the deli and stock up on farm-fresh meals to take home with from the newly launched Made at Home range by Zest (also available online for delivery).

Zest is available for group bookings and special celebrations.

An iconic culinary and shopping destination

The Elgin Railway Market is considered one of the finest indoor food and retail marketplaces in South Africa today. Located in the heart of the Elgin apple valley, the fantastic architectural details of the building itself set the atmosphere for this historic market’s collection of distinctive and diverse merchants.

This is a lively marketplace, bursting with character, in which to shop the region’s finest food fare, take home freshly cut flowers, and load up on artisanal goods and fresh produce.

In partnership with the Ceres Rail Company, a steam train visits the market a few times a month. The commotion of the arriving train is a must-see for all ages, and an actual ride on the train is a bucket list experience that is much in demand.

Visitors to the market can greet the train on the station platform or view its arrival from the Market’s leisure deck overlooking the railway. It’s the fine wine, local beer, gin and the variety of meals enjoyed here, just as much as the boutique shops, that make the Elgin Railway Market a beloved destination for locals and travellers alike.

A quintessential neighbourhood restaurant

Another of Elgin’s family-run farms, South Hill has succeeded in creating the quintessential neighbourhood restaurant: somewhere to kick back and relax with a group of friends or the entire family.

The tasting area – in which to sample South Hill’s cool climate, award-winning wines – shares the restaurant space with an ever-changing exhibition of eclectic contemporary South African art, while the outside area offers umbrella-shaded lawns overlooking the vineyards and a game of croquet. There is also a unique vineyard maze, offering a choice of shady tables requiring just a modicum of exploration to find each one.

South Hill specialises in long, lazy breakfasts and generous country platters or tapas, accompanied by homemade breads and relishes. A daily blackboard menu of special seasonal dishes is available, as is a good list of options for children. Wherever possible South Hill sources its ingredients from their own kitchen garden and suppliers from within the Elgin Valley area.

South Hill’s lovely venue is available to celebrate special times – a romantic meal, wedding, birthday lunch, corporate function – or just to make visitors happy with its beautiful gardens, lovely views, and excellent wines.
