Groot Constantia is the oldest wine-producing estate in South Africa. It is also home to the Manor House Museum, Art @ Constantia Gallery and two top restaurants, Jonkershuis and Simon’s Restaurant & Deli.
The Manor House, with its exhibition of furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, brass and copperware offers insight into the life of a successful 18th to late 19th century Cape farmer.
The original Cloete Cellar houses the Wine Museum and tasting room as well as exhibiting wine storage and drinking vessels from antiquity to the early 20th century it is also home to a sculpted pediment by Anton Anreith.
Panel, object and archaeological displays give an overview of Groot Constantia’s history, including the role of slavery on the estate. A carriage collection is exhibited in the coach house at the Jonkershuis complex. The modern Production Cellar has a self-guided museum and an audio tour of the vineyard.
The Art @ Constantia Gallery is open to the public and hosts a permanent exhibition, curated by Lyn Atterbury and James Hodgson, showcasing established and emerging local artists.
