With lifestyles that feel increasingly busy, plus the cacophony of noise about what food is healthy or unhealthy, cooking a wholesome meal can turn out to be quite a feat. But there are alternatives, and they are not just for the achingly well-off.
After all, think of the time spent planning meals. Then add in the schlep involved in shopping, carrying and prepping, let alone cooking and clearing up. Now imagine you could delegate all that.
In Cape Town, there are a variety of homemade food delivery services and private chefs who’ll do all the hard work to make sure you eat well while giving you more time to spend on your work or a hobby or your family. The list is long, but Christine Hogg has the low-down on five local companies who make gourmet food in your own kitchen, or drop it off at your doorstep.

Services: Private chefs, romantic dinners for two, five-course meals, fine-dining three-course meals, holiday chef, full-time chef, and event catering.
The experience: Founded by Zain Muller, a cordon-bleu chef who has 13 years of boundary-pushing culinary experience behind him, Private Chef Cape Town offers a wide range of top-notch, personal food experiences. Zain promises you’ll experience restaurant-quality meals in the comfort of your own home or villa. Whether it’s a special dinner for a group of friends, a scrumptious lunch feast or an evening of canapés and drinks, the services include menu planning according to your requirements, shopping for ingredients, pre-prep, cleaning up afterwards and, of course, the cooking itself. According to Zain, a popular request is to have a private chef organise a South African braai or even cook all your meals while you’re on holiday. And don’t worry – although your chef will be around whenever it’s time to eat – there’s no intrusion on privacy. Zain says that his chefs are highly experienced and professional, so intimate moments are shared with friends and family. “We do not sell stories, tell people what we hear or leak pictures or info of who we cook for or where people are staying.”
Special offers: If you hire a private chef for the duration of your holiday, you’ll get a reduced rate the longer your stay is. Private Chefs also assist international visitors with additional services such as accommodation, luxury cars, private tours and more.
Added extras: Menu-planning, stocking up your fridge pre-arrival, general assistance with groceries and cooking for kids come as value-added services with chef hire. Private Chefs can also provide qualified waiters, waitresses or barmen as well as décor and/or alcohol options.
How to order: Email email@example.com with your occasion, date, amount of guests and any brief as to what you like. A menu and quote will be compiled accordingly.

Services: Healthy office lunch delivery, deli and catering
The experience: By preparing fresh and healthy meals for offices daily, FOODwelove focuses on making life easier for those working the nine-to-five grind. All orders will arrive at the same time so employees can eat together and – ranging from R45 to R69 per person – it’s a convenient service that won’t break the bank. Companies can sponsor or contribute towards the lunches, or simply advertise the service to their employees. Founders Christina and Stephanie are adamant about providing a balanced diet, so the menu not only changes daily but varies according to season (you’ll never eat the same food twice during a four-week cycle) and all meals are free from preservatives, artificial additives and refined sugar. Options – which cater for all tastes, from vegans to meat eaters – include dishes such as parmesan chicken fingers on green beans and roasted baby tomato or black-bean and chickpea fritters served on roasted ratatouille veggies and wholewheat penne pasta. According to their website, “It’s the kind of food you’d love to cook at home, but often do not have the time to do so.”
Special offers: New clients (companies/groups of a minimum of five people) get free delivery for the first week.
Added extras: For locations beyond Cape Town and the Southern Suburbs, FOODwelove outsources the delivery to an external company. So nobody misses out, FOODwelove healthy office lunches are available at UberEATS too.
How to order: Companies who sign up with FOODwelove get an online account and their employees can order their weekly meals individually. Or you can order directly through FOODwelove if you’re a group of more than five people. Your lunch order needs to be placed by 11.30am on a Friday for the following week’s lunches. The meals will arrive by 12.30pm each day.
