Plan the Ultimate Date Night At Home

0

Remember when date night used to be a thing? You could enjoy a night out at your favourite bar and dine at your local restaurant. Or you may have gone to see a blockbuster at the cinema or throw a strike at a ten-pin bowling alley. Despite the current lockdown restrictions, it does not mean you should rule out a special celebration or romantic evening at home entirely. In fact, date night at home can be as splendid as being out and about.

Fortunately, for you, we’ve gone through the effort of ‘what to do’ and ‘what to eat’ and put together this great checklist of entertaining stay-at-home date night ideas.

CREATE YOUR OWN “FIRST THURSDAY” ARTWORK AT HOME WITH PAINT BY NUMBERS ART KITS

With most art classes off-limits for now, Paint by Numbers South Africa is the ultimate all-in-one art kit that allows everyone to experience the joy of painting, from the comfort of their own homes.

Each fun kit consists of printed canvas, paint and paintbrushes.  Everything you need to create a masterpiece on the spot – beautiful enough to display with pride. The numbers on the paint pots and the canvas corresponds, making it easy to just lose yourself in the act of painting.  So whether you are a beginner or an advanced artist, Paint By Numbers South Africa can help make your inner artist shine!

It’s the ideal stay-at-home date night idea as you will experience the joy of creating and finishing something you find beautiful while sharing a fun activity with your partner.  It is the ideal way to try painting, especially if you have no previous experience.

The website contains a large selection of canvasses with different sizes and levels of difficulty.  Whether you’re in the mood to paint something as simple as Matisse’s Blue Nude, something a bit more challenging like the classic Mona Lisa, or show off your artistic skill with The Scream from Edvard Munch – they’ve got it all!

To bring in a local flavour, they have recently launched their own unique South African canvasses, including pictures by famous artists like Irma Stern and Pierneef, as well as beautiful South African images, like Table Moutain, Hermanus, Johannesburg and the Karoo.

Paint by Numbers South Africa delivers nationwide via courier or Postnet (and in outlying areas) so you can be painting your masterpiece in no time!

SOPHISTICATED G&TS AT HOME WITH MUSGRAVE CRAFTED SPIRITS

Cape Town is home to some of the best craft gins in Africa. Celebrate date night with Musgrave Crafted Spirits that provide a flavour-infused with subtle flavours and distinctly African palette. They have a variety of spirits and gift sets for you to choose from to make it a special night with your partner.

They have two must try gins for date night. The first, the Original Musgrave Gin, is made up of a selection of 11 botanicals, each reflecting some aspect of the African Spice Route of old. Then there is the Musgrave Pink Gin which embodies romantic nostalgia, a sense of indulgence that comes from experiencing that which is beautiful.

Not only do they have excellent Gin, but their Musgrave Vanilla Copper is also a must-try! It is crafted to be the “Bourbon” of Brandy, – a new genre that remixes the brandy category to play where cognac has feared to tread. Musgrave Vanilla Copper is more aligned to the cognac drinker than to a traditional brandy drinker using the finest pot still brandy with the added excitement of flavour-infusion. You may also want to try their unique Musgrave Black Honey Copper which is deep caramel in colour and boasts complex bourbon-esque savoury flavours.

The  Musgrave Gift Sets is also a nice way to spoil your partner or just to enjoy at home together. And as winter sets in, the Musgrave Copper Black Honey & Truth Black Honey Coffee Sets are the perfect Winter hot toddy. You can place orders directly via their online store.

Date Night = Games Night!

Sometimes (if not all the time) the best date night is pulling out board games and playing the night away! Besides, a little bit of competition can be a great aphrodisiac.
Wizards World is an online store offering the largest range of in-stock board games, card games and tarot cards on the African continent. Their brick-and-mortar store in Observatory is also open to those wishing to pop in and to get a full scope of what’s on offer.

Some of their popular games are:

  • What do you Meme     R595.00        3 + players,

A social game for adults and a fantastic opportunity to host a fun double date. Players give captions for photocards, sometimes with hilarious results

  • Camel Up    R595.00        2-8 players,

Race camels around a pyramid. However, it is difficult to say who will win as camels can hitch a ride on another camel’s back. Bet on the winner or place a trap on the course.

  • Wizards Card Game     R250.00        2-6 players,

The trick-taking game with 4 Wizard cards and 4 Jester cards to upset the game in your favour. Insanely addictive game to play over and over.

  • Mystery Rummy – Al Capone    R295.00     2-4 players,

Rummy plus. Special cards allow you to take cards from opponents, search the discard pile, pinch a players meld and more.

This online board game store has tons more games which you can browse on their website. Service is excellent and efficient, with deliveries being completed in 2-3 days and their sales staff are always available telephonically during office hours.

DITCH THE BINGE-WATCHING MARATHON FOR THE LATEST IN LOCAL ARTS & CULTURE

For the What’s on in Cape Town team, no date night is complete without catching the latest theatre, opera, or live gig before or after a romantic dinner. That’s still possible for us and other lovers of the arts with the National Arts Festival usually hosted annually in Grahamstown. Instead, the 2020 edition is going virtual, making it possible for you to enjoy and support our thriving arts and culture community from the comfort of your home.

This 11-day online festival is filled with a range of live and pre-recorded productions, short films, virtual art exhibitions, jam sessions, interactive events, webinars and more, from the South African and international art scene.

Look out for Standard Bank Jazz Festival performances from Gloria Bosman, Thandiswa Mazwai, and Michael Bester, along with Qondiswa James’ topical theatre production which touches on identity, racism, and teen pregnancy within the enclave of an elite all-girls boarding school. As usual, the festival includes some stunning tricks up their sleeve. This year’s dark horses include Bru & Boegie: The Movie, South Africa’s first full-length 2D animation movie, and Anton Krueger’s brave foray into digital arts with the live Zoom show The Voice in Your Head uncovering an understanding of mindfulness.

Each day a range of curated events is released on their Daily Line-up page. You can catch the majority of the events from the day they go live until 16 July, with just a few of the live performances being once-off events. The majority of live events will be recorded so you will be able to catch them afterwards, although a few are exclusively live! There is also a pay-per-view platform available, where you can buy tickets to view works by a wide range of artists.

Head over to the virtual National Arts Festival website for a full scope of what’s on offer. Bookings are made directly on the website’s online store.
