The UCT Irma Stern Museum presents an exhibition of Nudes by Irma Stern, curated by Emeritus Professor of History of Art at the University of Cape Town, Dr Michael Godby.
Godby traces Irma Stern’s shifting approach to the subject of the nude, tying it in not only with her development as an artist and her idiosyncratic approach to life, but also exploring her paintings, drawings, sketches and sculptures of nudes as echoes of wider socio-political trends.
For this exhibition Irma Stern’s images are hung throughout the museum, juxtaposed with Stern’s own furniture and collections to emphasise a range of sub-themes. The exhibition displays many remarkable works that have rarely, and in some cases never, been exhibited in public before.
