Happy New Year, Cape Town! We’re all for starting off January the right way and the fun way, so check out this list of 10 of our favourite upcoming events this month. Here’s to a prosperous, adventure-filled, bucket-list-ticked 2019!

Zip Zap Circus


The Zip Zap Circus School takes over the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre this festive season, entertaining young and old with free performances by jugglers, trapeze artists, contortionists and more.

Swing Time


Cape Town City Ballet presents Swing Time, Sean Bovim’s ballet performed to the music of the swinging sixties. Set against the New York skyline, the audience is transported by the dancers’ ability to re-imagine the music of a bygone era in pure dance. Featuring hit tunes such as It Had To Be You, Unforgettable and Fly Me To The Moon.

Queen January Highlights


Showtime Australia presents the international hit tribute show. Experience the glory of Queen, personally endorsed by Freddie Mercury’s former assistant and biographer, Peter Freestone. Featuring songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions and more.

The Sun Met


The annual Sun Met, Africa’s richest race day, returns to Cape Town for its 2019 edition with the theme ‘African Luxury: Precious Metals’. The prestigious social destination and equestrian affair sees elite horse racing meet high-end fashion and top-flight entertainment.

Rosenthorn Cello Trio January Highlights


The world-first all-female electric cello trio performs as part of the Oude Libertas Summer Season. Rosanthorn combines the talents of SAMA-Nominee Carol Thorns, Cape Town Philharmonic’s Dorette Roos and composer Anjulie Nock to explore the compositional and technical journey that the Cello has to offer across multiple genres and timbres.

James Morrison January highlights


The award-winning British singer-songwriter and guitarist performs an up-close and personal concert in Cape Town, for the first time ever. Morrison has sold 4.5 million copies of his three albums, performed four world tours, including sold-out shows to thousands at London’s Hyde Park

Maynardville Open Air Theatre


The Maynardville Open-Air Theatre Festival returns with a programme that includes the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Cape Town City Ballet’s Swingtime in the Park and Cape Town Comedy Club with Jesters in the Park as well as a series of Sunday night concerts throughout the season, featuring Derek Gripper, Graham Weier and an evening of gospel choir. Pack a picnic to enjoy before the show or visit the bar and coffee shop at the venue.

Delheim Harvest Festival


A pink-themed festival in celebration of harvesting of Delheim’s world-renowned Pinotage Rosé. The day starts with grape picking and stomping, before easing into a lunch of salads, baked breads, cheese and preserves, with dessert constituting fynbos cupcakes and Pinotage ice-cream. Expect live music, vineyard tours, tractor rides and rewards for the best-dressed. Wines are on offer through Delheim’s complimentary wine bar.

Open Streets January Highlights


Cape Town residents walk, cycle, skate, play, dance, explore and connect with neighbours, friends and family on a car-free Bree Street. The aim of the Open Streets programme is to radically increase the use and ownership of roads as public spaces by individuals and communities throughout the city to ultimately help bridge the spatial and social divide in Cape Town.

Jordan Full Moon Run


The run allows participants to see a sunset as well as a breathtaking rising moon with a choice between a 5km or 10km Trail Run option. Music, food and fine wine is available after the race.
