We’ve created a list of activities to make this weekend worthwhile – whether your interests lie in crafts, entertainment, dancing, socialising or classic family fun!

MAfrika Jungle Theatre

KIDS CARNIVAL

Pop Up Theatre and The Joy Movement present Kids Carnival this weekend – an artistic and theatrical collaboration for children of all ages.

This magical two-day mini-festival includes theatre shows, creative workshops and interactive entertainment (including dancing and games), with snacks and meals on sale to fuel the fun.

Productions are by the renowned Jungle Theatre, Nicola Jackman, Fresja & Friends and the Psychedelic Theatre, with performances ranging from theatre, black light, story-telling, musical, and puppetry. Don’t miss out on this whimsical experience!

Admire a broad view of the CBD and Table Mountain while shopping from selected local designers and vintage curators at the Bo-Harvest Rooftop Market, by the Bo-Op Collective and Harvest Deli.

Bo-Op is a Local Design collective featuring Cape Town’s top fashion and lifestyle brands. Designers, among many others, include Skinny La Minx, Sealand, Aya Goods, Bamboo Revolution, NESS, Meraki Jewellery, Shine Shine and Ballo.  Harvest Café & Deli, which is renowned for its healthy and environmentally conscious approach to their cuisine – will be on hand with delicious seasonal food.

Make it Magical

MAKE IT MAGICAL

Channel your inner artist and give life to your imagination at the Make it Magical workshop, which offers a range of natural building projects. The workshop is hosted at Chilled Market at The Range in Tokai and Ferndale Nurseries at Constantia.

Participants create Fairy, Gnome and Elf Houses using materials such as wood, bark, pebbles, shells, and recycled and foraged resources. The Make it Magical team advise and assist with craft glue, gravel, grass, paper flowers, picket fencing and embellishments. This workshop is perfectly suited for the festive season!

Make it Magical workshop runs from 19 to 21 December and is open to all ages, although parental supervision is required for the little ones. Payment includes all the materials you need to create your masterpiece.

15TH BIRTHDAY FAMILY BOOGIE BY THE UP/JOY MOVEMENT

The Joy Movement celebrates 15 years with a silent dance on the beach, powered by Secret Sunrise Cape Town.

The Joy Movement’s mission is to collaborate with others who are developing or using tools for emotional wellness and personal development, and hence extend UPliftment programmes throughout Southern African communities to bring them joy and love.

Secret Sunrise pushes participants to expand their comfort zone to feel freedom and self-expression as they dance to headphones with connected stations to all other participants.  100% of profits go to supporting The Joy Movement.

THE PAN AFRICAN RUM FESTIVAL

Enjoy the finest local, Pan African and international rums at the Pan African Rum Festival this Saturday.

In collaboration with Neighbourgoods Market, the Pan African Rum Festival brings together South Africa’s pioneering local craft distilleries, exotic selections from Africa’s historic rum regions, and some of the most iconic rum houses of the Caribbean. Local rum vendors include Copeland Rum, Tapanga, Nihilo & Whistler; Pan African providers include Tip Tinto (Mozambique) and New Grove (Mauritius); and international vendors include Havana Club, Mount Gay, Kill Devil and Sun Camino.

Each producer presents their best rum-based beverages, among other cocktails, while a selection of Cape Town’s finest rum eateries and street food stars (including Cape Town’s hottest cuisine spot, The Potluck Club) serve up dishes from menus created especially for the festival. The festival focuses on embracing the cocktail culture and spirit of merriment that rum creates.

An array of DJs and live acts supply entertainment and dance-worthy tunes all afternoon and into the evening.

Zeitz MOCAA

ZEITZ MOCAA

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) is a public non-profit contemporary art museum with over one hundred galleries spread over nine floors. Although already suited for parents and families, this weekend they are offering several activities that are perfect for the little ones. All activities are part of the Zeitz MOCAA Centre for Art Education. Booking is essential, as spaces are limited.

Silo Circles: Children’s Summer Season Programme

This Silo Circles Children’s workshop will encourage children to use a variety of found objects to create their own printed gift-wrapping paper, inspired by the silo design of the iconic building. This workshop is about paint, ink, bright colours, circles of every kind and festive pattern-making. Aimed at ages 8 to 12 years old.

Children’s Tour! MOCAA Mapping the World

This children’s tour has been designed for children to discover information about the artists, where they live and work and what has inspired them. As they move from one work to another, they will fill in a blank map of the world, using symbols, drawings or words recording their findings of each artwork as well as their reactions to, and opinions about the artworks that they encounter. Aimed at ages 9 to 12 years old.

Puppets in Procession: Children’s Summer Season Programme

In this workshop, children  explore William Kentridge’s artwork ‘How Sweetly Play the Dance’. They will make paper puppets which represents an imaginary or real person, character or figure using paper, cardboard, siloxane and string. Once the children have completed their puppet figures they will animate them behind a shadow screen experiencing how the dark silhouettes of their puppets come to life against an illuminated background. Aimed at ages 9 to 12 years old.

Wack Word Designs: Children’s Summer Season Programme

In this workshop inspired by Jody Paulson’s artwork ‘Here To Stay’, children create an overlapping and layered word composition using a variety of different drawing and collage techniques. They are encouraged to use words that are related to important people, places, experiences and interests in their own lives as the basis of their mixed-media masterpiece. Aimed at ages 9 to 12 years old.

NATANIEL: MESSENGER

If you enjoy grand story-telling and musical acts, Nataniël’s new show, ‘Messenger’ – part of the Oude Libertas Summer Season Festival – is not to be missed!

Nataniël le Roux – referred to simply as Nataniël – is a South African singer, songwriter and entertainer. He aims for this performance to shock, surprise and renew audiences at a time of year traditionally associated with festivities. ‘Messenger’ is a collection of his new stories in English and Afrikaans, original compositions and timeless music from artists such as Tom Jones, Amy Winehouse and B.B King.

For half price, this is a great opportunity to see an African sunset from the top of one of the world’s Wonders of Nature. Take a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain and enjoy a balmy summer evening in the clouds.
