Cape Town Opera presents a rendition of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, their first live opera production since lockdown started in March.
The opera tells the story of two young men who put their fiancées to the test by playing an elaborate prank to prove their faithfulness. Bearing the subtitle, ‘The school for lovers’, Mozart’s Così fan tutte is a powerful tale of love, temptation and fidelity.
In a combination of music and bittersweet comedy, improbable disguises and partner-swapping are put side-by-side with a more serious, even cynical, commentary on the inevitability of human frailty.
The production is directed by Steven Stead, reuniting the team responsible for 2019’s Capuleti e i Montecchi. The show also features Cape Town Opera Young Artists alongside talented singers from the University of Cape Town Opera School. The UCT Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Maestro Jeremy Silver.
This production of Così fan tutte is sponsored by the City of Cape Town, Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the Rupert Music Foundation.
