Online Dance & Movement Classes

0

Adjusting to the new normal is not always an easy task, especially if you are someone who likes to be social and stay active. Luckily a lot of local Cape Town dance studios have made the transition to digital and are now teaching dance and movement classes online. From dressing up for a burlesque class to connecting with your mind and body in a NIA or tandava class, or staying fit and healthy with barre or pole dancing, there are many options to keep moving and stay connected with other dancers  without ever having to leave the house.

THE ROUGE REVUE

The Rouge Revue Burlesque Company – known for their sensual events and irresistible burlesque performers, The Rougettes – are offering Beginner Burlesque Classes on Zoom.

Founder Lady Magnolia promises that, even though burlesque seems “frivolous” in a crisis, it’s a great way to relieve stress, get some exercise and make new connections. “I encourage you to dress up for class! Let’s make it sexy and fun. There isn’t much else to do anyway! Wear your most outrageous sexy outfits! Turn us on, make us laugh, surprise us! Let’s get creative.”

Starting off with a catch-up and introduction, classes consist of a warm up – which apparently includes “something to make you laugh out loud” – as well as fitness burlesque drills, combinations, homework and a cool down. Please allow for about 60 minutes for class.

“Burlesque is for all womxn, regardless of age, race, weight or fitness levels. It is about learning to love our bodies and acknowledging the beauty of the feminine spirit.”

Online Nia Classes

NIA BY MOONCHILD CREATIONS

Part choreographed and part free form, NIA is a sensory-based movement practice that combines martial arts, healing arts and dance arts to create a high-powered, holistic workout.

It empowers people of all shapes and sizes to step into a more joyful relationship with their bodies, and classes are generally done barefoot to soul-stirring music.

Svenja Krauer of Moonchild Creations is offering one-hour-long virtual classes on Zoom. In the comfort of your living room, you’ll be able to get in touch with what your body needs, with clear real-time instructions and guidance. “Step into your own joyful journey with NIA, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live,” encourages Svenja.

Every NIA class follows a 7-step cycle, consisting of the setting of a focus and intent, stepping in, warming up, get going, cool down, floor play, and stepping out.

The Pole Project

THE POLE PROJECT

Considered Cape Town’s elite pole dance studio, The Pole Project teaches group and private lessons in pole fitness, pole dance, aerial and stretch classes.

The idea was born from a desire to teach the passion and spirit of pole dancing as an exciting way to explore the art of the dance. Beyond increasing strength, fitness levels and flexibility, pole dancing burns fat, tones and builds muscle definition, and demands an incredible amount of coordination and balance. Welcoming people from all walks of life, pole dancing is a fun endorphin-releasing way to boost your self-esteem while staying fit and healthy.

The Pole Project is offering a variety of online Zoom classes, and the best news is that most of them don’t even require you to have a pole at home! Classes include bodyweight strength conditioning (“Power”), stretching (“Flex & Bend”), yoga (“Friday Fundamentals” and “Sunday Soulflow”), and dance (“Exotic Dance” and “Floor Flow”).  “Power Flow” combines power yoga, strength conditioning and dance technique all in one.

Valentina Leo

TANDAVA DANCING BY THE LABORATORY OF LOVE

Valentina Leo aka “Mrs Love” – founder of The Laboratory of Love and former Madame Zingara performer and creative director – teaches dance not for entertainment but as a form of meditation. Tandava, Valentina explains, “is a very slow, mystical dance that leads to the perception of the cosmic body and attunement to our infinite nature.” Apparently it’s so simple that it requires hours and hours of practice, because our minds are so used to overcomplicating things, and are constantly looking for problems to solve. In tandava, the focus is on “bypassing your thinking mind” and listening to your body – dancers are encouraged to be free, and accept the movement that comes to them. “It’s the dance of true spontaneity and loving acceptance of all that we are.”

Valentina is teaching live tandava classes via Zoom or, alternatively, you can purchase recordings of the classes, if you prefer to practice in your own time. For more information and to join, click here

Time: Mondays at 11am and Wednsedays at 6.30pm | Cost: A recommended offer-what-you-can of R100 per class
