Heart of Cape Town Museum - Groote SchuurThe Heart of Cape Town is a museum complex located in the Groote Schuur Hospital. The hospital was founded in 1938, and is an institution renowned for  being the site of the first heart transplant. In 1967, Cape Town surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the surgery on the patient, Louis Washkansky.

The museum includes a guided tour of the original operating theatres with a a recreation of the surgery, background history of the surgery, the donor, the recipient and Dr Christiaan Barnard. Booking for these tours is essential.

Opening times: Mon – Fri 9am to 5pm  | Guided Tours Daily 9am, 11am, 1pm & 3pm
Cost: R150 SA Citizens |  R75 Students | R300 International visitors
