Over the past few years, Old Biscuit Mill gradually positioned themselves not only as the place to be seen on Saturday mornings but as one of the city’s top destinations for some seriously grown-up cuisine. All thanks to the likes of The Pot Luck Club and The Test Kitchen who settled in happily in the neighbourhood. Newly launched Purveyor Steakhouse and Pizzeria, formerly Burrata, continues in that vein with a gourmet twist to classic steakhouse fare.
The menu is brief and to the point, stripped of pretension and outlandish price points. Ex-Burrata fans can rest assured as the former pizza chef is still in place, so you can still expect ‘the best pizzas in town’ along with some new additions.
The secret weapon is Head Chef Justin Joubert, who brings a modern and youthful edge to traditional steakhouse sensibilities. Joubert’s CV features heavy hitters such as La Petit Colombe in Franschhoek and Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia. But more importantly, he also seems to be completely in touch with the demands of the modern Cape Town diner – sustainability, unique flavours, and supporting local.
Steaks and other meats cuts are supplied by Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, while seafood comes courtesy Southern Cross Seafood Deli. Both ventures are famous for their sustainable and small-scale approach to sourcing.
You’ll receive the same degree of attention to both the vegan and meat version of their Tartare starter, topped with crispy sage and Aioli and Cantonese dressing.
And in the true spirit of collaboration, Openwine’s Raphael Paterniti consulted on the wine list. It is as expected anything but ‘safe’ – a lineup of the most respected and underrated indie wine labels on offer in South Africa. If you’ve heard of but have not tasted Orange Wine yet, the menu has two options on hand to try. Cold beer on tap as well as cocktails is also on offer.
The atmosphere at Purveyor Steakhouse and Pizzeria is relaxed and fuss-free, making it casual enough for business lunches, family dinners, or an impromptu get-together with mates.
