Review: Bottelary Hills Family Day: Perfect for Wine-Lovers and Families

The annual Bottelary Hills Family Day offered a fun, relaxing day for old and young alike. The event took place at the serene Hazendal Estate, which boasts a large lawn area just outside a manor house. A shaded tent served as the wine tasting area, whilst local musicians performed some popular cover songs from the 60’s and 70’s.

Inside the tent, wine lovers sampled award-winning wines from 16 participating farms as well as a delectable range of food. What made the day special and practical is that it was aimed at providing entertainment for children as well as adults.

For adults there was a large selection of wines, olive oils from SA Olive competition winners, an impressive variety of olives (which I particularly enjoyed), artisanal breads and an assortment of cheeses. While the adults were indulging in these pleasures, the kids – who rolled their eyes at the ‘boring’ activities that were engaging their parents –  happily headed off to the dedicated kids playing area, the jumping castle, face painting, sand art, and pony rides.

The only shortcoming of this event was the music which was possibly a bit dated for most of the crowd who were young parents and friends.

All things considered, the event was enjoyable. If you love wine, and take pleasure in spending quality time with your family, this sort of day is perfect for you. Great wine, tasty bread, cheese, and a tranquil environment were the perfect companions to the slow summer sunset.
