Review: Face the Music 2 – A Celebration of Musical Culture

Fans of the immensely popular Face the Music will be delighted to know that the friendly and eclectic Kalk Bay Theatre is now hosting the sequel.  Face the Music 2 boasts new questions, songs, choreography and presenters, while retaining the entertaining music game show format.

The lights are dimmed as the cue to leave the loft restaurant and be seated in the cosy, wooden-floored theatre below. The atmosphere is relaxed and the audience is able to carry their wine from the restaurant to their cushioned seats.

The performance begins with an introductory number from the quiz hosts – the three glamorous and energetic girls, Vanessa Searle, Delray Burns and Margaux Fouche, who sing and dance their way through the evening’s trivia questions. Their powerfully sensual voices bring hits from every decade to life with convincing characterisation and slick choreography. From nostalgic classics from such iconic films as Dirty Dancing and Rocky to modern Katy Perry, songs are delivered with vigour and the occasional personal touch.

The girls lead the audience throughout the quiz with charm and quick wit and the intimate theatre space promotes interaction and a comfortable, light-hearted atmosphere. For those whose musical general knowledge is lacking, participation in the quiz is optional but the toe-tapping performance alone is well worth the cost of a ticket. The option of partaking as a team allows for interaction with your fellow theatre-goers, partner or family and makes Face the Music 2 an engaging evening at the theatre.

The winner of the quiz is presented with a bottle of fine Distell brandy but, regardless of your score, Face the Music 2 is an enjoyable celebration of musical culture from many an era. Searle, Burns and Fouche provide harmonies, character and charisma that make the production so much more than a mere trivia quiz.

Face the Music 2 is presented by Follow Spot Productions and will include a New Year’s Eve special event at the Kalk Bay Theatre. For more information visit their website,
