Review: Langebaan Country Estate

LangebaanG&T’s, golfer-approved putt-putt, an outdoor cinema, weekly dinner specials, ‘foot golf’, a state-of-the-art gym and bikes for rent – Langebaan Country Estate offers guests an enticing range of activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Perhaps the most special thing about this large, beautiful estate is the wildlife.  On a daily basis guests might spot a herd of buck roaming the green, flamingoes in the nearby wetland, wild rabbits and birdlife indigenous to the area. The landscape lends itself to activity with scenic footpaths and trails all around LCE and connecting to the neighbouring estate. Early risers may get to see a colourful sunrise on a morning walk and perhaps even spot it from the newly installed gym which is also open to public membership. Bikes are available to rent for younger guests to explore the secure grounds and the Mashie sports the novelty of ‘foot-golf’ which sees each player aiming to kick a soccer ball into a super-sized hole with the least possible taps. This proves to be great fun for adults as well as kids.

The estate is home to a number of family homes for holidayers, as well as two bedroom units and a honeymoon suite. The largest house has four bedrooms and a wraparound upstairs balcony and each unit includes an outdoor braai area and patio. This lends itself rather nicely to longer stays and is quite literally a home away from home complete with a stove, fridge and laundry facilities. The Clubhouse has an affordable menu including woodfired pizzas, a kids section and weekly specials. The banting burger served with avocado and stir-fried vegetables comes highly recommended (from a carb-lover, no less). Well-priced drink specials are on offer seven days a week at the Blaze Bar and the light-filled Halfway House serves fresh West Coast fish and the newly appointed pastry chef’s memorable malva pudding among many other lunchtime delights.

Special mention must also go to the putt-putt course, which mimics the geography of a full-sized green, making it a fun challenge for the seasoned golfer and rookie alike. An added benefit is the option to order drinks as you play. The estate is abuzz with golfing groups and offers packages for overnight golfing getaways. A good-humoured professional offers one-on-one lessons to anyone hoping to improve their swing and an undercover area offers shelter from the infamous Langebaan wind for those wanting to get some driving practice.

Langebaan Country Estate offers guests all the comforts of home, with a great selection of activities and experiences on offer for all ages. It is especially perfect for families and lengthy getaways, although just one evening can serve as a refreshing break for city slickers too. At under two hours from Cape Town, it is one of those hidden gems just a stone’s throw from Cape Town’s residential hub.
