Review: Om Revolution Yoga Workshop

Om Revolution YogaWhoever started the rumour that ‘Yoga isn’t a workout’ was sorely mistaken. The Om Revolution yoga workshop had my muscles trembling and awoke my sweat glands from their winter hibernation. If that wasn’t proof enough, the sore muscles the following day, particularly in the core, thigh and arm regions, were an aching reminder.

The Daylight Studio on Bree Street provided the perfect venue, with a 360 degree view of Cape Town and lots of natural light adding to the tranquil atmosphere that yoga often brings.

The three hour workshop immersed us into all eight limbs of yoga, beginning with a focus on the importance of proper Pranyama (breathwork) and moving into Vinyasa – the active flow of yoga postures and movement which are synchronised with breath. I began to suspect most of the participants were not new to yoga as they seemed to have these parts down.

But then came the peak poses, something slightly more advanced. The ‘crow pose’ and a headstand initially produced some refreshingly confused faces, and giggles rippled through the room as we tried to manouevre ourselves into apparently impossible positions. Our instructors moved calmly around the room, tweaking here and there to show the correct approach and ‘stacking’ techniques and – to our collective amazement – we found we could achieve the impossible… most of the time.

The workshop concluded with meditation, transporting us to a deeply relaxed and peaceful state. Well needed after spending the morning as a human pretzel.

From their level of professionalism it was easy to see that our instructors were experts in the field, but what stood out was how wonderfully friendly and helpful they were. It made the whole experience so much more enjoyable (and less intimidating) that someone was always there to assist in getting the poses right… and to ensure our safety!

Once finished we were treated to a mini buffet of tasty snacks and cupcakes (though I seemed to be the only participant indulging in the cupcakes) and discounted yoga merchandise.

The Om Revolution yoga workshop proved to be an enjoyable and educational morning. More are planned over the coming months, so for anyone wanting to improve and perfect their yoga skills, keep an eye out.
