With only one day in my schedule to sample the festival I randomly picked five wine estates. First stop: Champagne – I mean sparkling wine – and marshmallow-tasting at the House of JC Le Roux.
When I heard about the marshmallow / wine pairing I had my doubts. In my mind I saw a tall champagne flute next to a bowl of overly sweet pink and white marshmallows. So the fresh gourmet rose water, pistachio and strawberry marshmallows that awaited me were a pleasant surprise.
The tasting consisted of three glasses of champagne: Pinot Noir Rosé, La Valle Rosé and La Fleurette Rosé paired with the marshmallows. The Pinot Noir Rosé is a little too dry for my taste but became quite delicious when paired with the rose water marshmallow. The strawberry and La Fleurette Rosé was the Plus One’s favourite while I adored the taste of La Valle Rosé with pistachio.
At R 25 for this unusual tasting (valid during the run of Sensational Summer from 16-19 December ) this is definitely value for money, and each of the 17 vineyards is offering something just as exciting.
But don’t expect to get to all 17 in a day… I found the atmosphere and the staff at JC Le Roux so friendly and the wines so good that it became increasingly hard to move on. In fact… I confess… it was my only stop on the route. I am sure the other estates were just as fabulous but I wanted the party in my mouth to last just a little bit longer.
