In an era where social distancing has become the new normal, President Hotel’s new Savanna Summer Movie Nights series is giving locals and visitors a chance to explore the nightlife that this vibrant city has to offer with their outdoor cinema.
When we took up the President Hotel’s invite to their new Savanna Summer Movie Nights series, running until 16 December, it was one of those quintessential Cape Town summer evenings. Clear skies, a light breeze, and the type of weather where you’d want to chill outdoors until the early hours of the morning.
Joanne Clayton, Marketing and Brand Manager at the President Hotel say this revival of their cinema under the stars is a nice way to welcome locals back to the hotel, and provide an added experience for guests who may be travelling for business or leisure.
This outdoor cinema in Cape Town is set up in the hotel’s pool area with loungers and bean bags as well as a complimentary fleece blanket that you’re welcome to take home as a memento. Premium ticket holders get the added advantage of front row lounge seating couch seating, which gives you that comfy ‘at home’ feel but with all the trimmings of city nightlife.
Seats are spaced safely apart and unreserved, on a first-come basis (unless you buy the VIP ticket option), so we suggest arriving early to secure your space. And more importantly, the pool space also boasts some postcard-perfect views of the promenade and the Atlantic Ocean.
Your evening kicks off at 6pm with Savanna Angry Lemon on arrival, perfect timing to relax with the Bantry Bay sunset while some mellowy live tunes playing. One suggestion we’d make is to park or jump off at the Sea Point swimming pool at around 5:30pm and take a slow, leisurely stroll along the promenade leading up to the President Hotel to catch in some sea views. That’s such a great build-up to the evening.
The trimmings? All ticket holders receive a gourmet picnic box with homemade herby dips and crispy pita, cheese sosaties, pretzel rolls with yummy fillings, as well as other treats. And no movie night is complete without popcorn, roasted nuts and chocolate, packed as part of the box. If you’ve purchased a premium ticket, you can look forward to a bottle of Pongracz bubby, Lindt chocolates, and a special gift.
At 8pm, the movie starts with the large screen and high-quality sound courtesy of the headphone rental. When it comes to the movie selection, Savanna Summer Movie Nights plays it safe with crowd-pleasing romantic comedies and chick flicks such as The Devil Wears Prada, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, A Star is Born, and to get into the festive spirit they’ll end the season with Love, Actually.
While not exactly the type of lineup that would sway hardcore movie buffs or cult fanatics, the series still succeeds in setting the mood for a chilled, grown-up social night under the stars with your partner or a few friends. And ultimately, it seems that is their aim.
What puts Savanna Summer Movie Nights ahead of the curve is the care they’ve taken to convert a movie night into a tailored, and contactless experience that’s chic enough to rival a dinner at a fancy restaurant or catching a live performance.
From the setting to the live music and gourmet boxes, it makes for a fuss-free, classy night out on town.
