The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town performs Schubert’s Mass in E Flat, an evening of music by prominent Austrian composers, Schubert and Mozart.
The first part of the evening sees the Overture to The Magic Flute, one of Mozart’s most famous operas and one of his last works, which continues to be performed worldwide each year. Also on the programme is his four-movement 13th and best known serenade, nicknamed Eine kleine Nachtmusik.
After the 20 minute interval, the Choir performs Franz Schubert’s Mass No. 6 in E-flat major, a powerful work of many contrasts that is richly lyrical. The Mass makes pointed references to Schubert’s ‘Holy Trinity’ of composers – Mozart, Beethoven and Bach – and contains some of “the most dramatic and heart-felt music the composer ever wrote”.
The performance is conducted by Raymond Hughes, and soloists include Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi (soprano), Marcelle Steinmetz (alto), Tylor Lamani (tenor), Arthur Swan (tenor) and Charles Ainslie (bass). The Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra is under the leadership of Lucia di Blasio-Scottt.
