Shakespeare in Love, the award-winning South African premiere production of the romantic comedy film, returns to the Fugard Theatre due to popular demand.
Young Will Shakespeare has writer’s block, and the deadline for his new play is fast approaching, but he is in desperate need of inspiration. That is, until he finds his muse – Viola. This beautiful young woman is Will’s greatest admirer and stops at nothing (including breaking the law) to appear in his next play. Against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will’s love for Viola quickly blossoms and inspires him to write his greatest masterpiece.
Written by Lee Hall and adapted from the Academy Award-winning (1999) screenplay by Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman, Shakespeare in Love is directed by Greg Karvellas (The Road to Mecca, The Father, Bad Jews) and features a cast of 21 actors, including Daniel Mpilo Richards (West Side Story, Aunty Merle the Musical, State Fracture), Roxanne Hayward (Accident, Blood Drive, Saints and Strangers), and Robyn Scott (London Road, Elizabeth 1 – Almost By Chance A Woman).
“But, for the most part, it succeeds beyond witty one-liners and concludes with a beautifully acted tragic love story. Definitely a must-see!” Read Benn van der Westhuizen’s review of Shakespeare in Love.
