Tanya Poole | Ancient Codes

5 to 25 September 2019

Tanya Poole | Ancient CodesEverard Read presents Ancient Codes, a solo exhibition of new works by Makhanda based artist, Tanya Poole.

For Tanya Poole, the process of making a painting mark by mark is like nest making. To satisfy the urge to construct, to fantasise and to rationalise.

The ink on paper paintings in her latest exhibition are prompted by visual hooks in the natural environment around Tanya’s family’s house, and by deep instincts around family and partnerships. They are also embellished by thoughts around the ancient codes of genetics and biology, both ours and our environment’s.

Those interested are invited to join for the exhibition’s opening from 6.30pm.

Tanya Poole, graduating from Rhodes University with an MFA in 1998, has experience working with video, performance, installation, theatre design and, most recently, paint animation. Her work exhibits in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and abroad. Such exhibitions include: Collection of South African Art, at The Chicago Institute and the South African Embassy, USA (1996); Three Women at the Mattamondo Gallery, Notting Hill, London (2000); Possibilities (curated by the Bell-Roberts Gallery) in Mumbai, India (2007); Juncture: New Paintings from South Africa at the Artspace, Linienstrasse, Berlin, Germany (2010); and Mullinspoole (with Nigel Mullins) in Liemen, Germany in 2011.

She additionally has a number of accolades to her name, including joint First Prize in the 2004 Brett Kebble Art Awards, the Eastern Cape Premier’s Award for her contribution towards art in the Eastern Cape. and the set, prop and costume design for Andrew Buckland’s award-winning Fuse.
