For those who would rather forgo the use of metered taxis but still want to avoid walking 2km to 3km distances, three-wheeler taxis known as tuk tuks are headed to the Mother City. Eighty operating licenses will be made available, with preference given to bidders offering environmentally friendly tuk-tuks, particularly electric vehicles.
The areas to be provided in this initial phase are:
- Fresnaye and Bantry Bay
- Sea Point
- Bo Kaap and De Waterkant
- Walmer Estate, University Estate, Zonnebloem
- Kalk Bay, St James and Fish Hoek
- Simon’s Town
Tuk Tuk operators will be contracted for 36 months, towards the end of which time the city will perform a full review to determine the operation’s success and shortcomings, including how well the tuk tuks integrate with the MyCiTi bus service. Depending on whether the tender process is completed on time, the tuk tuk vehicles will be up and running from 1 September 2016, in time for the peak summer season.
