uKitchen: Pop-up social dining

Professional chefs. Intimate groups. Homely settings.

Sound good? uKitchen is the brainchild of Dale Leisegang and Joshua Raphael who, inspired by the warm hospitality they received when travelling in India, have set up a brilliantly simple supper club for both tourists and locals, right here in Cape Town.

The evenings offer a 3 to 5 course meal for 8 to 15 people, usually in the comfort of the chef’s own home, though there’s also a chance somewhere more unusual might be on offer… perhaps a picnic on Lion’s Head. Some evenings might include a hands-on demo, while others will be a straightforward dinner party, with or without extra entertainment. Chef Rey Coetzee, for example, is also a mentalist, magician and entertainer.

The experiences are priced from R300 per head for the evening, with clear notes on whether or not wine is included or if you can/should bring your own, and whether special dietary requirements can be catered for. Potential guests can browse the uKitchen website for options of where, when and what is on offer, and from whom, and can then book however many of the seats as they want, just at the touch of a button. Simple, right?

The uKitchen team ensures that it represents only the most passionate chefs with the highest standards. Current chefs in the line-up include Denise Levy of Ginger & Lime, who is renowned for her fun interactive cooking sessions at her beautiful home in Fresnaye; Lapo Magni, the Florentine who runs the Risotto Bar at the Old Biscuit Mill; and chef Jess Green, who has worked in top restaurants such as The Greenhouse and Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek. The variety of culinary experience on offer stretches from the islands of the Caribbean to the steamy streets of Malaysia.

As chef Jess Green says, “The fondest memories are made when people are gathered around the table.” Sure enough, the reviews on the site include such comments as “Great company and ambience”, “Fresh and bright and exquisitely put together”, and “Great food. Great vibe. All round awesomeness.”

This pop-up supper club is a fantastic way for tourists to meet and converse with locals over a delicious home-cooked meal. And it is equally fun for locals, who can meet new people, network or even book out an event for a private occasion.

And the feedback so far? Both the guests and the chefs are raving about it. Check now to see what’s popping up near you on
