(Un)Infecting the City

7 May 2021 to 30 June 2021

Infecting the CityInfecting the City is a public arts event that transforms Cape Town’s communal spaces into spectacular entertainment venues, reimagining transport and shopping hubs, squares, gardens and public walkways as stages showcasing an array of art forms.

Hosted by the Institute for Creative Arts at the University of Cape Town, this out-of-the-ordinary public arts festival places provocative, innovative art in the communal spaces of the City’s Central Business District (CBD). Everything on the festival programme is free and accessible to everybody. It has been renamed (Un)Infecting the City for this year for obvious reasons, and the performances and pieces elaborate on that play on words.

In previous years, the festival has showcased an array of multi-disciplinary art forms, and created a platform for artworks that engage with historical and contemporary narratives relevant to the city and its people. As South Africa grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic and, more recently, the fires in Cape Town and at UCT, this year’s (Un)Infecting the City has a thematic focus on the psychological and social impacts of this time.
