In a first in the history of the National Arts Festival, the 46th edition is going digital for the full 11-day programme.
The online festival consists of pre-recorded and live events, short films, virtual art exhibitions, jam sessions, interactive events, webinars and more, from the South African and international art scene. There is also be a pay-per-view platform available, where viewers can buy tickets to view works by a wide range of artists
The National Arts Festival website is the portal to the entire event. Each day, a programme of curated events is released. To view the daily programme, viewers need to buy a pass to unlock the events – some are live at a specific time; others are available to view on demand. There is also be a variety of works that are free, including art and craft galleries.
The festival also includes and online version of the Village Green fair. The Virtual Green is housed on the Festival’s website and presents traders selling woolly beanies, handmade jewellery, paintings and carvings, fabrics, clothes and more. The Eastern Cape’s showcase of local craft and design forms part of the offering too. They offer intricate beadwork, colourful traditional clothing, exquisitely carved bowls, vases and children’s toys, and more.
Shoppers wanting to buy from crafters can transact directly with traders through Peek Handmade, a digital platform dedicated to showcasing craft and design products made in South Africa. Currently, there are 528 businesses registered on the platform, showcasing over 3 790 products.
