Why Should I Hesitate: Sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge is on exhibition at Norval Foundation. It is the largest exhibition to be held in Africa in over a decade by Kentridge and presents his three-dimensional sculpture work from the past 19 years.

William Kentridge is a South African draftsman, performer, and filmmaker, best known for his animated drawings, whose work examines the years before and after apartheid. Kentridge gained international acclaim for his short film series 9 Drawings for Projection (1989–2003). In 2016, his solo exhibition “Thick Time” opened at White Chapel Gallery in London to critical acclaim, evoking 1920s-era technology and Dadaist collage. He has also directed several operas, most notably the 2017 production Wozzeck. The artist’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Goetz Collection in Munich, among others.

Covering several bodies of work, and testifying to his longstanding and spontaneous improvisation when handling three-dimensional form, Why Should I Hesitate: Sculpture sees the origins of these works in props from his operas and images from his animations stepping off the stage and out of the screen. Why Should I Hesitate: Sculpture premieres new works commissioned especially for the exhibition.

“Norval Foundation is presenting, for the first time, an exhibition focused solely on William Kentridge’s sculptural practice, working in conjunction with the artist and his studio. Kentridge’s sculptures embrace a spontaneous approach and have recently evolved towards the massive and the monumental. Simultaneously, and intension to the monumental aspects of his practice, he is revealed to be a choreographer as much as a sculptor,” says Karel Nel, Senior Advising Curator at Norval Foundation.

A series of member events and public programmes are held over the opening weekend.
