The theme of Woordfees 2019 is Jonk (Young) and the Visual Art programme has been curated by Theo Kleynhans with this in mind. The exhibitions on display explore a variety of subjects and mediums, but all encompass an aesthetic accountability.
The two young festival artists this year are Penny George and Selvin November. George’s ‘Tergeo’ is a collection of print work that is extremely detailed and explores the role of the female in communities. She is inspired by the use of discarded items. Contrastingly, ‘Young, Free and Single’ by November is a collection of large abstract paintings that explore socio-political issues. He examines the binary idea of freedom and slavery and what it means to be young in our current dispensation.
Many other South African artists are exhibiting throughout the festival period. For more information about the artists and exhibitions at Woordfees click here.
Art tours are hosted daily (except on Sunday, 10 March) by Kleynhans at 10am. Tours start from the lobby of the Stellenbosch University Conservatory and last about 2 hours.
