A perfect date idea perhaps, as Baxter Theatre brings to life G.W Gluck’s ‘Orphée et Eurydice’ with a performance in which all three leads are played by women.
The play is set in a new style of opera, distinguished by classical simplicity and dramatic integrity, within the setting of the famous Orpheus story. Climaxing in the much-loved elaborate solo “J’ai perdu mon Eurydice” (hear it here sung by Maria Callas), this dramatization of Orphée’s descent into the underworld in pursuit of his wife Eurydice stands as a moving testament to love, loss and the power of music.
Conducted by Cape Town Opera’s Associate Music Director Tim Murray, Matthew Wild’s new production showcases the extraordinary talents of the Cape Town Opera Chorus, using movement and poetic imagery to create a new vision of this haunting myth.
