From its artistic spirit to its ancient geology, the McGregor Valley boasts a range of natural and historical wonders that makes this former agricultural town the ideal place to visit this Heritage month.

McGregor, just two hours outside of Cape Town, was originally planned to produce fruit for the larger towns and was one of the biggest apricot growing areas in the country.

The old Lei water system, which was historically provided for fruit irrigation, has ‘sluits’ that are still used to pump water to homes today. The low lying valley between the Riviersonderend and Langeberg mountains was an ancient sea and trilobites, an extinct group of marine invertebrates, have been found in the gardens.

Now home to many artists, authors, poets and creatives, the village also has a large community of herbalists and horticulturists.

The upcoming McGregor Magic Garden Festival is a showcase of over 30 private and community gardens which are open to visitors this Heritage weekend. We have an exclusive package on offer this Heritage weekend.

Stay in the village for two nights at The Space, a cosy cottage right next to the owner’s pottery workshop and have access to the hub of the Garden Festival with local entertainment, markets and other activities. Experience the magic of the village’s hidden gardens, see the wildflowers in bloom or take a tour with a local shaman – McGregor is the ideal place to reconnect with nature and find your zen.
